Looks like a local problem on your side?
What is the security relevance of this problem?

The /var filesystem might be turned readonly ... usually happens on I/O errors... check "dmesg" for hardware errors?

The file system can be read only even of the directory is not. Commonly
caused by file system errors. And to the contrary, this is clearly a
general base error rather than a whois error.

Explain why you come to that conclusion.

I think you are on the wrong mailing list. Not a security issue,
security package or in this case a security update.

If you feel that this is an issue for you, please report an issue in
bugzilla against the openSUSE distribution / maintenance component.

It seems to me you have a local problem on your system, not that there
is a security issue with the whois update.

Please repost on the opensuse@... mail list where we will be happy to help.

Include the output of the "mount" command, and of "ps ax | grep rpm".
