eGroupWare - Complete Open-Souce Cal, Contact, KB, Tracker, etc. tool

David C. Rankin
Guys,

Just dropping a line for those who haven't heard of eGroupWare. In my
opinion it is the best Linux based exchange replacement available and through
its webdav, caldav and carddav provides complete mobile device integration for
contacts, calendar and group project collaboration. (yes, it works with the
iPhone too!) It seamlessly integrates with OpenOffice/LibreOffice as a webdav
server providing web based document collaboration. It is a php, mysql app with
a bit of ajax/js working its way into the project.

The current version is 1.8 and the latest updates are available via svn.
openSuSE has a package, but I prefer the svn install. I have used it since 1.0
and for the better part of a decade, version updates have been seamless. The
project is headed by Ralf Becker and it actively developed with a commercial
version and support offered under the Stylite name. For small/medium business
(or home use), this is a fantastic package.

The normal disclaimers apply - I'm in no way associated with the project
(other than helping file bugs and feature requests), this is just a FYI for
the community to educate those who have interest in a complete, corporate
class, calendar, contact, todo, tracker, knowledge-base, collaborative type
tool that exceeds what is currently the "exchange standard" on the
closed-source side of the house.

Configuration and setup is a 15 min. process (including download). Just
make sure you have apache2, mysql, pear and php installed and running and then
simply install eGroupWare, give the web server write permission to
header.inc.php and run the setup routine: http://yourTLD/egroupware/setup.

For the Impatient:

For those interested, simply (default paths for openSuSE):

cd /srv/www/htdocs
   # (either give yourself temp write permissions to htdocs or su to root)

svn checkout \
http://svn.egroupware.org/egroupware/branches/branch/aliases/default .

   # Note the '.' at the end. and you can look at the following for details
   # http://community.egroupware.org/wiki?wikipage=subversion

chown wwwrun:www /srv/www/htdocs/egroupware/header.inc.php

   Then point your browser to:

http://yourTLD/egroupware/setup

and follow the prompts to install any missing dependencies and then configure
your header (to configure the mysql database user and pass, etc.) and then log
in and configure your server specifics for data storage, backup location,
mail, etc... I (and the egroupware docs) recommend creating an 'admin' user
that you use to manage the install (like root in Linux) rather than
administering egw from a normal user account. (both work - I have installs
that use each) Using an admin user for administration just provides a nice
separation between administration and use.

As with any package of this scale there are a number of items you can tweak
to your liking, but for the most part all the defaults will work just fine.
The application allows fine grain control via 'user' and 'group' ACLs to
control who has access to what information and the sharing of information
between different groups of employees, etc..

This project is actively developed, and has been for a number of years. It
just keeps getting better. The documentation for the project at egroupware.org
is fairly complete and the mailing lists (both user and dev) are first rate
and able to answer anything not covered by the site.

Since this package is php/mysql based, even with hundreds of users, there
is very little load on your server and throughput demands are minimal. Well
worth looking at if you have interest in a true server based groupware
solution. Enjoy.

Oops, that should be (for the 1.8 branch)

http://svn.egroupware.org/egroupware/branches/1.8/aliases/default .

## same note about noticing the '.' at the end :)

Sounds pretty groovy. Can you package it for openSUSE with OBS? Then we could
push it to go into one of the standard repos. If you can't... well neither can
I, lol. But we could make a package request on openFATE.

Hi David,

I am reading up on building a private cloud server, and saw your post.
I'd like to look into eGroupware. I did the svn and got all installed,
but only get a blank screen when I try to do the setup, no errors or any
response. On the same server MediaWiki is running without problems. I
removed the .htaccess file under ../egroupware to not hold-up the
webserver. goggeling shows that there has been such problems with
eGroupware before, this question is seen since 2002. Any Ideas what
could be the problem?

Ahem... what I am missing when I look at the server:eGroupWare repo? It
is the 1.8 version, isn't it?

And, from my experience, it pretty much installs and 'just works' ;-)
At least that was my experience earlier this year when looking at it
for a friend.

Thanks, Werner!

I really hate that we have all these additional repos, and no central page
that lists them all.

No, it is a Virtual Server running init 3. All installed for later
perhaps using graphical login, but not now. Like I said, MediaWiki is
happy, so php, phpMyAdmin & MySQL all OK.

# PHP Version 5.3.8.
# Apache/2.2.15 (Linux/SUSE)
# MySQL client version: mysqlnd 5.0.8-dev - 20102224 - Revision: 310735
# eGroupware: 1.8 mit svn in /srv/www/htdocs/egroupware; stup mit
http://TLD_URL/egroupware/setup (like the documentation).

Roger, All,

The openSuSE package is just fine. I simply prefer the svn version so I can
get incremental updates simply by:

su
cd /srv/www/htdocs/egroupware
svn update *

I don't know how frequently the rpm is updated, but on balance a monthly 'svn
up *' will keep you with all the current updates.

Further, it helps the egroupware folks out when you can reference the
svnversion in any bug report.

I cannot stress enough - this is a fantastic package regardless where you get
it. Given the fact that smart phones can make use of the caldav and carddav
feature and provide integrated calendars and contacts, not to mention your data
being 'securely' available from anywhere on the globe where you have an internet
connection, it is one of the best examples of open-source solving a real world
problem.
