Tumbleweed - Review of the week 2017/36

Dominique Leuenberger / DimStar
Dear Tumbleweed users and hackers,

I’m positively surprised: I can report about 3 snapshots that were
released last week (0830, 0831, 0904) – and a 4th one passed openQA
(0905) but some heavy truck must block the cable: the sync is blocked;
I’ll still include it in the review)

I’m mainly astonished that there were still 3 (4) snapshots completed,
considering the issues the infrastructure had during the last days
(openQA had a corrupted disk/database, then download.opensuse.org
disappeared on us).

What did those 4 snapshots being us?

  * More updates from the KDE Applications 17.08.0 stack
  * Linux Kernel 4.12.9
  * Mono 5.2.0
  * Mesa 17.1.8 (the packages wrongly identify was 11.1.6, sorry for
that)
  * gpg 2.2.0

Work-in-progress items, that will reach you once ready:

  * Linux Kernel 4.13
  * GNOME 3.26
  * Glibc removes the obsolete libnsl/nis integration (a sep. libnsl is
introduced)
  * Mesa 17.2.0
  * PHP5 will be removed from the repositories
  * Distro rebuild with -fstack-clash-protection enabled
  * Java 9 will become the default java implementation

Things are piling up – which is a good and healthy sign

Cheers,
Dominique

new fresh tumbleweed installation random crashs

Hi there,

i have on 4 identical systems new, fresh tumbleweed
installated (about 4 weeks in past). opensurce mesa graphic.
- -> at the moment only one system daily about 12 hours running,
then switching off, next morning on again.
its used as desktop but with several server functionalitys
(ssh, samba, mariadb, nfs, and soon (when i find time) some kvm's)

hardware is:
amd ryzen 7 1700 lga am4
32gb ram
ssd mvme
4gb amd radeon pro wx4100 pci-e
asrock ab350m lga am4 micro atx ddr4
dvd-burner,sata
1x parallel pci-e
2 monitors attached

i have one main problem (on all 4 systems,
so i do think no broken hardware):

randomly crashs the system about every 3 days.
first screen (kde) not responding, couple of minutes later
monitor's switching to "no signal" its not possible to ping,
not ssh, not ntfs not samba, system is dead.

first time it happend shortly after standard installation,
with blinking keyboard led's. now it happend without this.

i am not a programmer, but using suse/opensuse since 9.3
so a little familar with it. 9.3 -> 10.1 -> 11.4 -> tumbleweed
(every old update brakes nearly every thing isdn/printer/samba/etc,
so i decidet to try the roling release hopefully braking things smoothley
and not everything togehther....

i am not very familar with the "for me new" "system log" - system
(journalctl)

how should i proceed to find the problem, where to report,
and what should i implement as info.

thanks,

simoN

Even if new it can be broken.

I've got all kind of strange behaviour and newer hardware during one year.
Especially crash of all kind and any time for no good reason.
And all of this stop when I decide to change de display port cable between
the docking station and the external monitor.

My was new, and high end quality vendor.

FWIW early Ryzen CPUs are prone to causing segfaults, so you should make sure
yours are not affected. Seems like AMD will replace such defective CPUs.
