Curiously, I changed:

  <packages type="image" patternType="plusRecommended">
    ...
  </packages>
  <packages type="iso">
    <package name="dracut-kiwi-live"/>
    <package name="yast2-live-installer" />
  </packages>

To:

  <packages type="image" patternType="plusRecommended">
    ...
    <package name="dracut-kiwi-live"/>
    <package name="yast2-live-installer" />
  </packages>
  <!--<packages type="iso">
    <package name="dracut-kiwi-live"/>
    <package name="yast2-live-installer" />
  </packages>-->

And the package installation has proceeded.

Actually, all the prepare step went well, but the create step failed with "No space left on device":

How much space can we use at OBS? SUSE Studio used to offer 15GB for free.

I am also moving this thread to the opensuse-buildservice mailing list because maybe it is more appropriate.

Thank you!

Frank Schreiner-2
tl;dr

are you aware of build constraints?

No, I was not. I'm going to read that. Thank you, Frank Schreiner!

But how to explain this? (I'll try to write less)

If config.kiwi looks like this, KIWI says packages dracut-kiwi-live and yast2-live-installer are not found:

  <packages type="image" patternType="plusRecommended">
    ...
  </packages>
  <packages type="iso">
    <package name="dracut-kiwi-live"/>
    <package name="yast2-live-installer" />
  </packages>

This way, those packages are found and installed:

  <packages type="image" patternType="plusRecommended">
    ...
    <package name="dracut-kiwi-live"/>
    <package name="yast2-live-installer" />
  </packages>

Why? Do you know?

Here is my config.kiwi:
