I installed sane-backends version 1.0.27 from Sauerland OBS repository,
but the scanner still isn't recognized in yast Scanner configuration
window.

Driver Scanner
epkowa Epson (unknown model) at epkowah:usb001:004

I don't know where to do this, I will need more detailed instructions.

Here are the readouts:

sane-find-scanner

  # sane-find-scanner will now attempt to detect your scanner. If the
  # result is different from what you expected, first make sure your
  # scanner is powered up and properly connected to your computer.

  # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make
sure that
  # you have loaded a kernel SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8 [EPSON], product=0x0130 [EPSON
Scanner]) at libusb:001:004
  # Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be
supported by
  # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.

  # Not checking for parallel port scanners.

  # Most Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary
ports
  # can't be detected by this program.

scanimage -L
device `epkowa:usb:001:004' is a Epson (unknown model) flatbed scanner

That should either be
  export SANE_USB_WORKAROUND=1
  <front-end-app>
or
  SANE_USB_WORKAROUND=1 <front-end-app>

And if it works, put the 'export SANE_USB_WORKAROUND=1' in your .profile

It didn't work as far as getting the scanner to configure in yast.
There is no change from my previous posts.  I still can't use the
scanner.

I guess I might, but I don't use hplip.  (isn't that for printers only?)

hpaio driver ( all in one ) which works for most HP's is in both hplip-sane
and sane-backends.

Got them both installed, but actually hpaio is only in hplip.
Nonetheless, I don't recall ever having do anything with YaST to get
the scanner going.

Is it a scanner only? I'm used to having to configure the scanner inside All-
In-One devices. Using hp-setup to setup the printer part, Yast to have the
scanner part configured.

After googling it seems you need the iscan package which doesn't seem to
be provided after 12.2 for some reason. The source code and rpm packages
are available from epson's download page.

There is a home repo that has it and some info:

https://software.opensuse.org/package/iscan

:(

I don't have the original posting anymore - if this is a 'normall' PC you
might have some luck using a (USB2-only) add-on card.  I did have those
scanner issues before (https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=975866),
and it was the USB3 (specifically, the xhci driver) causing the trouble.

(The bugreport might be worth having a look at because of Johannes Meixners
extensive explanations)

A few days ago I tried moving the cable to the USB hub that forks to
the printer
and the scanner to the USB2 port.  No help.  I tried to connect
the scanner usb cable directly to the USB2 port and the USB3 port
on the back of the computer, but that didn't help either.

Good idea about the bug report, I will take a look at it.
