Leap 42.2 - mc sftp: an error occurred while reading ~/.ssh/config - WTF?

David C. Rankin
All,

Is this me, or is sftp in mc broken after the latest ssl updates? When I try
and sftp to hosts in my hotlist I get:

------------------
11: sftp: an error occurred while reading ~/.ssh/config: Resource temporarily
unavailable

<hitting ESC the following error is there>

Cannot chdir to "/sftp://2pi/"
Bad file descriptor (9)
------------------

I always sftp between hosts the same way, e.g. to get to host '2pi' I would use:

  cd /sftp://2pi/home/david

I just tried in Leap 42.2 and received the error. Switched to my Arch box
and tried it, and it works normally.

Can someone confirm the issue and I'll file the bug report. If it's just me
doing something dumb, then what to check?? (there is nothing reported in
journalctl)

I never could make sftp work well in 'mc'; instead I used ssh till it
broke and was removed. Now I use instead, externally on the CLI before
starting mc:

sshfs USER@HOST:/ ~/fusermount/
mc ~/fusermount/
fusermount -u ~/fusermount

Glad to know I'm not crazy... Frustrating thing is it works flawlessly in
Arch. So somewhere the is an openSuSE config issue that is mucking it up.
Strangely, sftp:// in konqueror works fine between all boxes, it's just the
darn mc config that is messed up. I'll file the bug tomorrow and post the link.

I don't use mc, but I'd try to find out the underlying system call
with 'strace -f mc'.

I would assume that the action for that config file is either open(2) or read(2),
but the error EAGAIN is quite unlikely for either of them.

Have a nice day,
Berny

I've tried briefly and got the same error "Cannot chdir to
"/sftp://... " when trying to connect to OS42.2 host.
But when I tried Win10 host (with free ssh server installed), it
worked (though complained about some error -31 in protocol).

The error -31 in protocol is normal. There was a bug filed with mc regarding
that not too long ago.

see: https://midnight-commander.org/ticket/3406

I have filed the original sftp connection failure as:

https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1042797
