KDE locks up on 42.2

James Knott
I've noticed that my desktop frequently locks up recently.  I can only
get going agian by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Backspace a couple of times and
logging back in.  Is this a new "feature"?

Still the "Xeon E3-1200 v2/3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller",
with i915 driver?
https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2017-03/msg00138.html

For me, Mikhail's workaround helped, I never had lock ups anymore:
| I looked around in "Configure Desktop" and in Hardware > Display and
| Monitor found Compositor. The Rendering backend was set to OpenGL 2.0.
| I changed it to XRender and the blinking was fixed. Putting it here in
| case someone googles.
https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2017-03/msg00283.html

Mikhail's Bug report:

Has anyone else experienced this?  It happens at least every day or two.

Are you sure you are up to date on KDE updates?
This use to be common, but its been months since this has happened.

You can usually do Alt-F2, then type into the little window:
   killall plasmashell & kstart plasmashell

You usually don't lose any work in progress.

This has been going on since 2013.  There are many long bug reports on this.

Some attribute it to a transparent window popped up by a program that
subsequently crashed, leaving the window hanging around capturing
keystrokes and mouse clicks.

Others attribute it to sddm. (I know I switched to lightdm and these problems
went away, but that was on a different distro.

I keep up with KDE changes, (or as many as opensuse sends my way) and haven't
seen a occurrence of this for a long time.

I am familiar with that and even wrote a script to do it.  However, this
problem is much more recent and pressing Alt-F2 doesn't do anything. The
only thing that gets me out is to shut KDE down entirely and log
back in.  However, it's only the desktop that locks up.  Any running
apps keep running.  And I can even use NoMachine, from another computer,
to access a Windows 10 virtual machine, even though I can't switch to it
from my Linux desktop.

BTW, I still have to do that, in addition to this newer problem.  There
are also other KDE issues on my ThinkPad, where I lose multiple desktops
and also the top bar in open windows, where the X is for shutting down
the app.  When that happens, I have to use Alt-F4 to close.

What I have found, James, is that at random times some app. I am using
stops working and I get the (error) message that 'kwin has stopped
working. Do you want to restart application or want to report this
problem' -- or words to this effect. From memory this occurs when I am
closing the app..  I have never experienced this in all the many years I
have been using openSUSE until now in Leap 42.2.

As I said, this is a random occurrence and not reproducible on demand.
If my memory (such as it is) serves me right, I did look in the logs but
didn't see anything to indicate such a failure of Kwin.

Oh, I am using KDE as the desktop, using the nVidia driver which I
always compile myself, and this is on a desktop computer (16GB of RAM,
8-core AMD CPU) and not a laptop (which I rarely use).

I don't get any error and leaving it for several minutes does not
produce any difference.

That seems to be working.  Now if only something could be done about
having to restart plasma shell so often.

have you tried to determine the cause?
have you filed a bug report describing your experience?
do you hope someone else can determine your problem w/o access to your
machine and no hints besides you saying plasma crashes?

Actually, yes.  I discussed this a couple of months back and, IIRC,
there was a bug report.  Someone here provided some commands to restart
plasma shell.  I put them in a script that I run when necessary.

Sorry, I have no idea. Here, plasma shell tends to crash only on shutdown.

so spend some of your time and help others help you.

what bug report #
discussed?

restarting plasmashell is a work-a-round, somewhat like a round tuit.  you
have a problem, provide information about when it happens, what is
running, what seems to make it happen, what *you* have tried that helps or
does not help.

Just to add my two cents to this topic....

I had this same problem in another distro, as did many people on
that distro at the time.

Switching from sddm to lightdm seemed to solve it.
Install lightdm  and either the lightdm-kde-greeter or the lightdm-gtk-greeter
then

systemctl enable lightdm.service
systemctl stop sddm.service
start lightdm.service
systemctl disable sddm.service

Then reboot to see that it all works.

This solved it, and some where along the way since that time.

KDE subsequently found and fixed the problem which turned out to be some invisible remnant of a
crashed window overlaying the screen capturing mouse clicks and keystrokes. It was also more common
among users of dual monitor systems.

That distro is running Plasma 5.10.2 and KDE Frameworks 5.35 and Qt 5.9.0,
all of which are much much newer than I have on
Leap 42.2 which shows  Plasma 5.8.6  and KDE Frameworks 5.26 and QT 5.6.1

Hint: run kinfocenter

There is a significant amount of time and number of fixes between those
versions. IIRC Qt 5.9.1 is out as well.

The invisible remnant of a crashed window overlaying the screen capturing
mouse clicks and keystrokes -- is worse than someone making a screenshot of
your current desktop and setting it as the wallpaper..... :p
