KDE locks up on 42.2

James Knott
I've noticed that my desktop frequently locks up recently.  I can only
get going agian by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Backspace a couple of times and
logging back in.  Is this a new "feature"?

Still the "Xeon E3-1200 v2/3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller",
with i915 driver?
https://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2017-03/msg00138.html

For me, Mikhail's workaround helped, I never had lock ups anymore:
| I looked around in "Configure Desktop" and in Hardware > Display and
| Monitor found Compositor. The Rendering backend was set to OpenGL 2.0.
| I changed it to XRender and the blinking was fixed. Putting it here in
| case someone googles.

Mikhail's Bug report:

Has anyone else experienced this?  It happens at least every day or two.

Are you sure you are up to date on KDE updates?
This use to be common, but its been months since this has happened.

You can usually do Alt-F2, then type into the little window:
   killall plasmashell & kstart plasmashell

You usually don't lose any work in progress.

This has been going on since 2013.  There are many long bug reports on this.

Some attribute it to a transparent window popped up by a program that
subsequently crashed, leaving the window hanging around capturing
keystrokes and mouse clicks.

Others attribute it to sddm. (I know I switched to lightdm and these problems
went away, but that was on a different distro.

I keep up with KDE changes, (or as many as opensuse sends my way) and haven't
seen a occurrence of this for a long time.

I am familiar with that and even wrote a script to do it.  However, this
problem is much more recent and pressing Alt-F2 doesn't do anything. The
only thing that gets me out is to shut KDE down entirely and log
back in.  However, it's only the desktop that locks up.  Any running
apps keep running.  And I can even use NoMachine, from another computer,
to access a Windows 10 virtual machine, even though I can't switch to it
from my Linux desktop.

BTW, I still have to do that, in addition to this newer problem.  There
are also other KDE issues on my ThinkPad, where I lose multiple desktops
and also the top bar in open windows, where the X is for shutting down
the app.  When that happens, I have to use Alt-F4 to close.

What I have found, James, is that at random times some app. I am using
stops working and I get the (error) message that 'kwin has stopped
working. Do you want to restart application or want to report this
problem' -- or words to this effect. From memory this occurs when I am
closing the app..  I have never experienced this in all the many years I
have been using openSUSE until now in Leap 42.2.

As I said, this is a random occurrence and not reproducible on demand.
If my memory (such as it is) serves me right, I did look in the logs but
didn't see anything to indicate such a failure of Kwin.

Oh, I am using KDE as the desktop, using the nVidia driver which I
always compile myself, and this is on a desktop computer (16GB of RAM,
8-core AMD CPU) and not a laptop (which I rarely use).

I don't get any error and leaving it for several minutes does not
produce any difference.
